Debt relief discussion postponed

The Paris Club of creditor nations on Tuesday took off its agenda a scheduled discussion on debt relief for Uganda, the World Bank’s resident economist in Uganda, Robert Blake, told IRIN on Thursday. The Club, which was holding its monthly meeting in Paris, was due to consider the implementation of a debt relief programme for Uganda, agreed in May. “I cannot confirm the that the recent clashes [between the Ugandan and Rwandan armies] in Kisangani were the reason for the postponement,” he said. Uganda owes Paris Club creditors $278 million, about nine per cent of its $3.2 billion debt, which is mostly owed to multilateral institutions, the semi-official ‘New Vision’ newspaper reported on Wednesday.
