Government deploys Chinese doctors

The Zambian government has deployed 39 Chinese doctors to major hospitals in the Copperbelt region and Lusaka's University Teaching hospital, 'The Post' reported on Wednesday.

About 46 Zambian doctors embarked on strike action last December in protest against what they called low wages, shortage of drugs and medicines and bad working conditions and have refused to go back until their conditions are improved.

The reports said the deployment of the Chinese doctors, who arrived in the country last week, is aimed at alleviating the shortage of doctors in the country's hospitals. Many of the striking doctors have reportedly left the country for greener pastures.
