Portugal on Thursday cancelled nearly a tenth of Mozambique’s bilateral debt as part of an emergency plan to help the flood-ravaged Southern African country, media reports said.
According to the reports, the aid package included writing off US $145 million of its former colony’s debt and donating US $5 million that was earmarked for renting helicopters for rescue operations.
Portugal has already announced a US $2 million donation following Mozambique’s appeal last week for international help, and on Wednesday sent 40 mt of aid, including food, medicines, rubber rafts and tents.
