Government appeals for US $65 million

The Mozambique government said on Wednesday that it needed US $65 million to address a flood emergency. Out of this total, the United Nations is appealing for US $13.6 million to assist 300,000 people directly affected by the floods, a UN statement said on Wednesday.

"UN agencies targeting this population aim to provide assistance in the following sectors: Food, shelter, health, water and sanitation, education, communication and coordination," the statement said. It said that urgent repair work was needed on roads, bridges, railways and electricity networks.

The statement said that contributions could be made available through the government's Instituto Nacional de Gestao de Calamidades (INGC) or the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Funds channelled directly to the government's INGC can be deposited in account number: 2025555151 Banco Commercial, Mozambique Maputo. Funds channelled through OCHA should be transferred to account no. CO-590.160.1. Swift code: SBCOCHGG12A at the UBS AG, P.O. Box 2770, CH-1211 Geneva 2, with reference: OCHA - Mozambique - Floods.
