France has announced it is to resume development aid to Niger some seven months after it was cut following a coup which overthrew former president Ibrahim Bare Mainassara in April 1999, the French government said on Thursday.
The official announcement, at a dinner in Paris on Thursday in honour of a three-day visit by President Mamadou Tandja, was made by the secretary of state for women and professional training, Nicole Perry.
She added that the cooperation minister, Charles Josselin, would visit Niger in March.
Tandja was democratically elected in November 1999 following a transitional period of military rule by Major Daouda Mallam Wanke, the commander of Niger’s presidential guard unit reportedly responsible for gunning down Mainassara at Niamey airport on 9 April.
