Niger urged the international community on Thursday to increase financial aid to Africa, particular its poorest countries. In a speech at the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mayaki noted that public aid to his country had dropped to its lowest in 50 years.
Niger is among the world’s least developed countries: 80 percent of its people are illiterate, 63 percent live below the official poverty line, and life expectancy is 47 years.
