Opposition leader Kenneth Kaunda has been endorsed as presidential candidate for the 2001 elections by his UNIP party, local news reports said on Monday. At the end of a four day central committee meeting, a senior UNIP official said: "This has marked the end of intra-party fighting, we are now working to make (UNIP) a formidable force for the 2001 elections."
Kaunda, who led Zambia at independence, has lost the last two elections since 1991 to the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy and its president Frederick Chiluba.
