Angolan former minister nominated as new SADC executive secretary

Angola's former oil minister, Joao Landoide, has been nominated as the new executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), media reports said on Wednesday. According to the news reports, no other SADC country had nominated a candidate.

Kaire Mbuende of Namibia, who held the post since 1997, stepped down at the organisation's recent summit in the Mozambican capital Maputo. Mbuende resigned after repeated criticism, especially from South Africa, Botswana and Zambia, over the running of the organisation from its headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana. The executive secretary, is mainly responsible for implementing decisions taken at the annual summit and those of the council of ministers.
