Foreign missions accused of exploiting workers

    JOHANNESBURG

    Reports of foreign missions violating Namibian labour laws have been brought to the attention of the Labour Commissioner and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, 'The Namibian' reported on Wednesday.

    According to news reports the government has received a number of complaints by employees. These varied from indiscriminate slashing of salaries, unexplained dismissals and no payment for work done on holidays or after normal working hours. Labour Commissioner, Mathew Shinguandja was quoted as saying: "We have lots of employees who are complaining that they are being mistreated, but the issue of the embassies is a very tricky one.

    They are representing their respective governments so someone employed at a particular embassy is subjected to the labour laws of that embassy's country."
