Voter registration began in Mozambique on Tuesday, ahead of the
presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for later this year. According to news reports, the exercise is expected to last about two months, with an estimated 8 million people registering as voters. No date has as yet been set for the elections, however. President Joaquim Chissano was quoted as saying that the election "will be held within a year."
