France has trained 670 Senegalese troops who could be deployed as part of the United Nations Observer Mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC), AFP reported.
Two hundred French soldiers were involved in the training from 10-30 September. The Senegalese troops received instruction in shooting, convoy escort, checkpoint management and defence of sensitive zones, AFP quoted a French Defence Ministry official as saying on Friday. The battalion would be stationed in Dakar as part of a project to reinforce African peacekeeping capabilities.
France would provide trucks, ambulances and a medical-surgical field hospital if the troops are deployed in DRC. France has supplied equipment - including helmets, bullet-proof jackets, jeeps and water-tank trailers - to Morocco, which could also deploy a battalion to MONUC.
