Civilian flee fighting in DRC

    NAIROBI

    Fighting in the DRC is sending a new flow of refugees into neighbouring countries, UNHCR said. The agency’s spokesman, Kris Janowski, told journalists in Geneva that the agency recently registered 762 new Congolese arrivals in Zambia bringing the total number of civilians who had fled the country over the last few days to approximately 1,000. “There is now an urgent need to transfer the new arrivals to a UNHCR camp because the presence of a large number of people staying in the open in the border zone poses the risk of an outbreak of disease,” he noted. UNHCR plans to send the refugees to Kala camp, which was opened some three months ago and is currently housing 2,350 people.
