The editor of the independent weekly “Savana”, Salomao Moyana, and one of the paper’s senior reporters, Paulo Machava, have both received anonymous phone calls threatening them with death, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) said on Monday. MISA quoted the Mozambican news agency, AIM, as saying that the two journalists were part of a list of people to be “eliminated”. The death list apparently also included some businessmen and a politician.
Moyana was quoted as saying that, in the light of the 22 November assassination of ‘Metical’ editor Carlos Cardoso, such threats had to be taken seriously. As a result, Moyana said, he had requested police protection. “There are forces that are not interested in the atmosphere of democratic freedoms, freedoms of expression and of the press, that we are experiencing”, he said. Instead, they wanted to “speed up the deterioration of the political situation by attacking the press”.
