Situation still a source of serious concern, Annan says

    ABIDJAN

    There have been significant improvements as a result of efforts to restore normalcy in Sierra Leone, but the situation there still gives rise to serious concern for regional peace and security, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, has said.

    In his latest report on the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), the eighth in a series to the UN Security Council, Annan described the signing of a ceasefire agreement between the rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and the Sierra Leone government of President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah as “a first step towards creating an environment conducive to the reactivation of the peace process” which collapsed in May.

    However, he noted that there were reports that the RUF had continued to train and arm fighters while digging into combat positions.
