Violation of arms embargo

    NAIROBI

    The interim government’s deputy prime minister complained that recent deliveries of Ethiopian arms to Somalia was an open violation of a UN arms embargo. Osman Jama Ali ‘Kallun’ said the ban was being openly violated, after a council of ministers of the interim government held a closed-door meeting to discuss the security situation, said south Mogadishu-based newspaper ‘Xog-Ogaal’ on 24 December. According to the report, monitored by the BBC, the interim government is expected to send a written complaint to the UN Security council regarding arms imports to Somalia. Local and international media reported the arrival of Ethiopian arms last week to Mogadishu faction leader, Musa Sude Yallohow. The arrival of the Ethiopian weapons in trucks sparked the first military confrontation between government forces and factional militia.
