Forces of the Islamic court in Buulo Mareer in Lower Shabeelle Region of southern Somalia have clashed with militia loyal to local traders. The incident occurred on Sunday, when Islamic court forces tried to arrest a murder suspect, local humanitarian sources told IRIN. Fighting erupted after traders in Buulo Mareer detained a known town thief, whom they accused of stealing goods. The men reportedly killed him and dumped his body in a river. Relatives of the dead man who found his body complained to the court. The court, after investigating the case, tried to arrest the traders suspected to be involved in the killing. Militia guarding the traders’ premises opened fire on the court forces, killing one and wounding another, said the sources.
The Islamic court forces eventually arrested the traders, who are now in custody awaiting trial. The town of Buulo Mareer was now calm, the sources told IRIN.
