The training in Cairo is in two phases (10-13 June and 24-27 June) and aims to give community leaders without a medical background some knowledge of how to prepare their communities against the threat of pandemic influenza. Participants have been selected from organizations representing the main migrant communities in Egypt, including Sudanese, Eritrean, Somali and Iraqi. Some Egyptian community leaders are also attending the training sessions.
Egypt is among 69 countries to have reported cases of A(H1N1). It has also reported 79 cases of avian influenza - A(H5N1) - among humans, more than any other country outside Asia.
