Suspected mercenaries appear in court

The suspected mercenaries arrested in Zimbabwe on charges of conspiring to topple the president of Equatorial Guinea appeared before a court set up on Tuesday at the country's maximum security prison, Chikurubi, on the outskirts of the capital, Harare. The 70 men, including three flight crew members, were arrested on 7 March on board a plane that landed at Harare International airport. They appeared in the special court wearing shackles on their legs and arms, reported news agencies. The state read out five charges against them, including the violation of the Public Order and Security Act, the Firearms Act and the Immigration Act. The men were not asked to plead. Magistrate Mishrod Guvamombe presided over the proceedings and remanded them until 13 April.
