AIDS projects receive EU millions

    Two HIV/AIDS projects in Tanzania are set to benefit from an additional US $3.2 million European Union (EU) grant, the local Business Times reported on Friday. Since their partnership in 1997, the EU and the local African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF), have covered activities in 13 regions with funds currently amounting to almost $2.3 million. Following recent talks between the partnership, $1.8 has now been allocated to a project for the reduction of HIV transmission, and another $1.4 million for alleviating suffering among people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. AMREF-Tanzania director, Dr Daraus Bukenya, welcomed the additional funding, adding that neither of these HIV/AIDS programmes would have been possible without the support of the EU.
