WHO reports acute respiratory syndrome

    NAIROBI

    Some 500 of the 4,000 people with acute respiratory illness reported since October in Bosobolo, in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have died, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported on Friday.

    "The clinical features of the illness include rhinorrhea, headache, arthralgia and respiratory insufficiency," it said.

    Laboratory confirmation of the cause of this outbreak was awaited, it said, while access to and communications with the affected area were difficult. Meanwhile, Medecins sans Frontieres-France, Epicentre and WHO were helping the Ministry of Health investigate the outbreak and providing medical services.
