NGO starts peace programme

The non-governmental organisation Mercy Corps has begun a three-year community peace building and development programme (CPBD) targeting at least 600 Liberian communities, the NGO reported on Thursday. The goal of the programme is to increase civil society participation and strengthen democracy. It is being implemented in partnership with the Academy for Educational Development and Search for Common Ground and is funded by the United States Agency for International Development. "Community members will work together to identify their needs and will receive support from 20 Liberian NGOs to address community issues. The programme will also have a public information component promoting peace, stability, and development through radio and other media," Mercy Corps said. Mercy Corps works to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression by helping people build secure, productive, and just communities. Since 1979, it has provided at least US $640 million to assist 74 countries. It is based in the United States and Scotland. In Liberia, it is working with community groups and NGOs to increase the role of civil society in democratic governance. The CPBD started in August.
