At least 108 people died from meningitis in Niger in the first seven months of this year, the Directorate of Epidemiological Surveillance and Monitoring reported. It said the total number of cases was 4,793.
The directorate said 272 people were infected and 25 died in June, but this decreased to 80 cases and eight deaths in July. It said fewer cases were expected with the onset of rains: meningitis flourishes in dry conditions.
The incidence of the disease was much higher in January-July 2001, when 8,043 cases were registered and at least 614 died, the government department reported.
