US $14 million for HIV/AIDS drugs

    The Rwandan government is to spend US $14.64 million pledged in April by the United Nations Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, on antiretroviral drugs, the Rwanda News Agency (RNA) reported on Tuesday.

    The money has been pledged over two years, with $3.3 million for the first year.

    Asked whether there were plans to reduce market prices of the drugs, the director-general of the Centrale d'Achat des Médicaments Essentiels au Rwanda, Ernest Rwagasana, said people should not expect instant reduction, but, if all went well, Rwandans could expect the drugs at cheap prices, RNA reported.

    Meanwhile, a meeting of the African Association of Purchasing Centres for the Essential Generic Drugs, held in Kigali last week, recommended that medical and pharmaceutical companies should never again go beyond a profit of 5 percent on HIV/AIDS drugs in Rwanda, RNA reported.
