NEPAD summit to be held in Senegal next week

    African presidents, representatives of international organisations including the United Nations and European Union, and journalists are to hold a summit in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, on 15- 17 April, on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).

    The heads of state summit, Senegalese president Abdoulaye Wade said in a statement, will discuss the “partnership with the private sector for financing Africa's growth through NEPAD”. Previously scheduled for January, the summit was postponed to “take into account the conclusions” of the UN development conference that was held on 18-22 March, in Monterrey, Mexico.
    “The Dakar Conference will review concrete projects in 10 priority areas, including infrastructure, information and communication technology, energy and agriculture,” Wade said. Some 12 presidents are scheduled to attend the summit.
    NEPAD was endorsed by African leaders at the Organisation of African Unity summit in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on 11 July 2001 as a strategy to enhance poverty eradication and sustainable growth and development. It focuses on good governance, democracy, infrastructure, education, health, information and communication technology, agriculture, environment, energy and access to markets.
