Security forces destroy tonnes of drugs

    Authorities in Burkina Faso destroyed on Monday four tonnes of narcotic drugs worth 125 million francs (US $165,000), including indian hemp,cannabis and prohibited tablets. The symbolic destruction was carried out to mark Customs Day.

    The narcotics, security officials told IRIN, were hidden in fish and local spice bags by drug dealers who brought them into the country mainly from Nigeria and Ghana. Burkina Faso shares a border with these countries and four others, and is a transit country, they added.

    Officials also said drug consumption within Burkina Faso had increased but vowed to continue seizing consignments brought into the country. on Wednesday, Gabon's Africa No. 1 radio quoted Francoise Toure of the anti-narcotics department as saying surveillance had been stepped up.
