A US-based non-governmental organisation, World Education (WE), has started its first programme of development activities in Casamance, southern Senegal, after recently opening an office in the principal town of Ziguinchor, WE's Director, Abdou Sarr, told IRIN on Thursday.
During the development programme, to run from 2002 to 2005, WE will finance and assist local organisations in implementing projects to promote social development and enhance the lives of the local population. So far, five local umbrella organisations have been selected to conduct activities in various sectors, including formal and non-formal education, micro-credit financing for women, and health, Sarr said.
Another key component of WE's work, he added, will centre on enhancing the local organisations' management capabilities to ensure project sustainability after WE leaves Casamance.
Future projects will include the creation of a local radio station and other initiatives to enhance the development of farming and pastoral communities, Sarr said. The three-year development programme has a budget of some US $1.6-million.
