Italy contributes medical supplies for Equateur

    NAIROBI

    The Embassy of Italy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Monday contributed a wide array of essential medical supplies as part of a coordinated effort to rehabilitate five hospitals and 135 health centres in health districts from Boende to Ikela in northwestern Equateur Province.

    UNICEF in Kinshasa reported that the contribution was part of a joint war relief effort among the Italian Department of Development Cooperation, Caritas Secours International, the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC and UNICEF to assist people of the region who have been without adequate health care since war broke out three years ago.

    The total cost of the operation is estimated at US $170,000, and expected to benefit some 900,000 residents of Boende, Ikela, Befale, Bokungu and Djolu.
