Over 500,000 children to be vaccinated in Somali region

The health bureau of the Somali Regional State has said it has finalised preparations to vaccinate over half a million children against measles. The head of the bureau's communicable diseases control department, Dr Feti Tahir, speaking at a training session for health workers in the regional capital, Jijiga, said that random studies in the Afder, Warder, Degeh Bur, Fik, Liben and Kebri Dehar zones showed that there was a possibility of an outbreak of the disease in those areas, the pro-government Walta Information Centre reported on Monday. Tahir said the necessary vaccines and personnel were in place in 792 health stations, and that vaccination of children aged from six weeks to five years would start next Saturday.
