Journalist banned from leaving Angola

Angolan journalist Gilberto Neto, a reporter for the weekly newspaper ‘Folha 8’, said on Sunday that he had been barred from leaving Angola and that his passport had been confiscated by the authorities. News reports said Neto was on his way to London to attend a Reuters Foundation course, when he was stopped at Luanda’s airport on Sunday. “They confiscated my passport and did not allow me to leave the country,” the 25-year-old journalist was quoted as saying. Neto said he was told by a government official that the travel ban was linked to his brief arrest in September 1999 for a report on a police raid on the Catholic-run radio station ‘Radio Ecclesia’.
