At least 20 people have died of cholera in Chad, the UN’s World Health Organization reported as of 25 July.
The majority of the 608 cases registered have been in N’djamena district, WHO said. They include 22 cases and 2 deaths in newly affected areas:
Massakori, some 130 km northeast of the capital, along with Bongor and Moundou, about 250 km and 480 km south of N’jdamena respectively.
WHO is working with the Ministry of Health and the NGO Medecins Sans Frontieres to help control the outbreak. Measures already in place in the capital include health education broadcasts on radio and television, the treatment of community wells and improved sanitation in food outlets.
Cases have also been registered recently in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo.
