Opposition politician released

A senior official of Cote d’Ivoire’s main opposition party, the
Rassemblement des republicains (RDR), was released on Tuesday after serving four months in detention for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government. Local media reported that the politician, Jean-Jacques Bechio, who was arrested on 31 January, had been freed pending further investigations.

A number of other senior RDR members detained following unrest in December 2000 have been released since late April. On Friday, cases against Secretary-General Henriette Diabate and another top RDR official were dropped, the pro-government ‘Notre Voie’ reported.

According to the pro-RDR daily ‘Le Patriote’, 67 members of the party are still in detention.
