Ex-ruling party to boycott parliament

The former ruling party, the Parti democratique de Cote d’Ivoire (PDCI), has announced that it will not sit at the national assembly until by-elections are held, Ivorian newspapers reported on Thursday. The party announced this on Wednesday after a meeting of its politburo, saying the decision aimed at “preserving national unity”.

The party urged the government to “organize by-elections in the north so all the regions could participate in the democratic life of the country”. In last October’s parliamentary elections, the PDCI won 77 seats while the current ruling party, the Front Populaire Ivoirien, won 99 seats.

The national assembly still needs to fill 28 seats left vacant in northern constituencies where representatives of the Rassemblement des republicains boycotted the polls after the party leader, Alassane Ouattara, was barred from the elections on a nationality issue. The national assembly is scheduled to convene on Sunday, yet no date has been set for the by-elections.
