Hijacker of rebel plane killed

A Congolese rebel commander on Monday shot and killed one of two armed men who tried to hijack an Antonov plane belonging to the Great Lakes Company (CGL), which flies between Goma and Kindu in eastern DRC. News organisations reported that the commander arrested the second man who is now in custody. The Associated Press (AP) quoted the spokesman of the Goma-based Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-Goma), Kin Kiey Mulumba, as saying that the two, who were former Congolese soldiers, had threatened to explode a hand grenade aboard the Russian-built Antonov plane shortly after it took off from Goma and was headed for Kindu. All the 15 passengers were unharmed, he added. Rebel-controlled Uvira radio reported on Thursday that investigations into the hijack were continuing.
