Civilians reported killed in new attacks

    NAIROBI

    Nine civilians were killed early this week in two attacks by men armed with automatic weapons in southeastern Guinea, AFP reported, quoting police sources. It said the attacks occurred early on Tuesday and were carried out by rebels who had come from Liberia.

    According to the French news agency, six persons were killed in Bayaro, near the border town of Macenta, while three others were killed near Guekedou. It said the attackers fled in the direction of Liberia just before military reinforcements arrived from Guekedou.

    Since September, Guinean villages near the border with Sierra Leone and Liberia have been attacked by armed men who, Guinean authorities say, have invaded the country from Liberia.
    Hundreds of people, mainly civilians, are reported to have died in the attacks.
