The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has appealed for financial and material help for some 140,000 refugees in Guinea over the next three months.
The Federation said on Tuesday that it needed at least US $209,000.
Immediate support is required to begin the transfer of some 80,000 refugees in camps near the border with Liberia and Sierra Leone, and to help others living in towns. Other needs include arranging an office in Kissidougou for the Federation and the Guinean Red Cross.
The Federation’s structure in Nzerekore would also be reinforced. The site will have to accommodate some 30,000 Liberian refugees from Macenta and the prefectures of Nzerekore, Lola, Yomou and Beyla. Old camps in the area are to be rehabilitated to accommodate the refugees.
Wells would be cleaned and boreholes drilled under a proposed sanitation programme, while assistance is to be provided to vulnerable groups of refugees. The operations base in Forecariah, an area that has been attacked several times by armed men based in Sierra Leone, will be closed and one will be installed in Kindia to accommodate 40,000 refugees, the Federation said.
Non-food items required include 14,000 blankets, 10,000 mattresses, 20 mt of second-hand clothing and 30,000 pieces of soap. In addition, the Federation said, supplies are needed to construct eight hangars to be used for the temporary reception and shelter of refugees.
