People reportedly fleeing to Butembo

    NAIROBI

    Further north, near Beni in North Kivu, Mayi-Mayi militiamen attacked the village of Maboya earlier this month, destroying a hydroelectric installation, local sources said. They claimed the Mayi-Mayi attacked a lorry carrying six Ugandan soldiers, four of whom were killed and the other two escaped. The Ugandans reportedly returned to carry out a revenge attack on the nearby village of Loya - which they said was a base for the Mayi-Mayi - killing six people. People are said to be fleeing Maboya, heading for Butembo. The sources warned that while the governing Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie-Mouvement de liberation (RCD-ML) was preoccupied with its leadership wrangles in Bunia, the people of Butembo were finding life increasingly difficult with little or nothing to eat.
