The Nigerian government has ordered doctors who have been on strike for two months to resume their duties by Thursday or face “appropriate action”, but the country’s labour leaders say they stand by the medical workers.
“We give our solidarity to the striking doctors because we believe that the health sector has been neglected for a long time by the government,” Chris Uyot, spokesman for the Nigeria Labour Congress, was quoted by AFP as saying on Thursday.
The Ministry of Health said the strike had led to hundreds of avoidable deaths. It did not specify what kind of action the authorities might take against medical workers who continue their protest.
Doctors are demanding higher salaries and back pay. President Olusegun Obasanjo promised last week to settle their claims.
