Ugandan officials who arrived in the northeastern town of Bunia on Friday are still there trying to normalise relations between the leader of the rebel Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie-Mouvement de liberation (RCD-ML), Ernest Wamba dia Wamba, and his two former deputies. According to RCD-ML spokesman, Jean-Ernest Louis Kayiviro, the Ugandan team, led by the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM’s) secretary-general, James Wapakhabulo, managed to bring Wamba and his suspended deputies Mbusa Nyamwisi and John Tibasiima - accused of trying to stage a mutiny - together on Saturday and Sunday.
“To our surprise on Monday morning, the two went to the radio station and wanted to announce that they want the former assembly [which comprised 147 members] to restore the movement (RCD-ML) and look for new leaders,” Kayiviro told IRIN. “This has been the cause of the disagreement because they insist on the historical perspective of the problem rather than the present political problem...RCD-ML has resolved that members must unite under the leadership of Wamba.” He said the Ugandan delegation would leave Bunia on Tuesday.
