Farmers welcome police action against veterans

Zimbabwe’s commercial farmers have welcomed the eviction of war veterans from five white-owned farms and has urged President Robert Mugabe to restore order on hundreds of other occupied farms, news reports said on Wednesday. “The government and police action are welcome,” a spokesman from the Commercial Farmers Union (CFU) was quoted as saying. “But what needs to be done is for the government to ensure that law and order is restored on other farms across the country because farming operations have been seriously affected by these occupations,” he added.

On Monday, police destroyed shacks and evicted hundreds of war veterans and their supporters from five farms outside Harare. On Tuesday Chenjerai Hunzvi, leader of he country’s war veterans denounced the police action. “It shows that they are puppets of the white commercial farmers and their western imperialist masters,” Hunzvi was quoted as saying.
