UNITA rebels surrender

    ABIDJAN

    A total of 165 former soldiers of the rebel UNITA movement of Jonas Savimbi reportedly surrendered to the Angolan authorities in Huila province at the weekend.

    Speaking to the official news agency, Angop, UNITA’s provincial secretary for Huila province, Alberto da Silva Alves, said the former rebels came from Rundu, in northern Namibia.

    Da Silva Alves said the group of rebels included three captains and two junior officers, some of whom were carrying weapons. They have all been accommodated at a camp for displaced persons in the Palanca communal area, Humpata district, where they have been receiving emergency relief assistance. The former rebels turned themselves over to the authorities in response to the Angolan government’s amnesty offer to rebels who lay down arms, Angop said.
