Suit challenging presidential candidate dismissed

The Electoral Commission in Dar es Salaam recently dismissed a suit against chairman of the Tanzania Labour Party Augustine Mrema to contest the presidency of the United Republic.

Speaking with Radio Tanzania Abraham Senguji, attorney for the Electoral Commission, said the commission’s verdict was based on the electoral laws of 1995, paragraph 40, section three, stipulating that the only persons allowed to contest candidature is another presidential candidate, or the Director of the Electoral Commission.
