A Zimbabwean Supreme Court judge on Tuesday nullified thousands of postal ballots cast in the June parliamentary elections.
In his ruling, Justice Nicholas McNally said thousands of ballot papers - all from the estimated 12,000 troops serving in the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - were invalid. “All votes cast on such ballot papers are void and invalid,” he said.
The main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has claimed the June elections were marred by irregularities and vote-rigging and had asked the courts to disallow thousands of applications for postal votes by the troops in the DRC.
