The lower house of Liberia’s parliament has set up a 13-member committee to investigate allegations of the country’s involvement in diamond smuggling and gunrunning with rebels in Sierra Leone, news organisations reported on Friday.
‘The Inquirer’, a Monrovia daily, quoted house speaker Nyunduel Monkonmana as saying in a press statement that the committee would conduct public hearings and cite individuals and groups to provide it with information.
The committee, he added, would also contact the parliaments of Britain and Sierra Leone as well as the United States Congress to gather information on the alleged deeds.
