Joint mission notes drought in Kirundo

A joint UN mission to Burundi’s northern province of Kirundo has noted drought in the area characterised by lack of food and water,” the OCHA unit in Burundi said. As a result, there is in an increase in malnutrition among children and women. “There are also hunger-related illnesses,” an official from the office said. The area has a population of about 517,627. The team went to the area to assess and evaluate the effects of drought so as to make proposals for solutions. The mission followed a recent appeal by the Burundi government to the international community for assistance for regions affected by drought currently facing serious food shortages.
