Mwila to form new opposition party

    ABIDJAN

    Zambian politician Ben Mwila, a former minister expelled last month from the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) party, said on Thursday that he was forming a new political party ahead of general elections next year, news reports said.

    “We have come to an inescapable decision to form a political party which we can use as an instrument for participation in the long struggle to uplift the plight of our long-suffering people,” Mwila told a news conference in Lusaka.

    Analysts were quoted as saying that the new party, whose name Mwila did not give, could lead to a split within President Frederick Chiluba’s MMD.
