President Robert Mugabe on Wednesday met with the European Union envoy for the Great Lakes region to discuss the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the state-owned ZIANA news agency said.
Envoy Aldo Ajello told journalists before the talks that he would discuss ways to speed up the peace process with Mugabe, who said last month that foreign troops would remain in the DRC as long as a military threat to Kinshasa remained. Zimbabwe has an estimated 11,000 troops stationed in the DRC. Angolan and Namibian troops have also been in the DRC backing the government against Rwandan and Ugandan-supported rebels.
Ajello said the EU was putting pressure on the United Nations to begin deployment of a peacekeeping force but said security concerns and logistical problems stood in the way.
