Zimbabwe’s state-owned oil procurement company, the National Oil Company of Zimbabwe (NOCZIM), on Wednesday increased the prices of fuel and warned that more increases were in the offing.
Prices for paraffin - used by the majority of poor Zimbabweans - increased from US $0.17 cents to US $0.39 cents, while the price of diesel went up by 19 percent from US $0.52 cents to US $0.62 cents. Petrol prices were increased by 25.6 percent from US $0.57 cents to US $0.72 cents. Aviation fuel experienced the smallest price rise of 1.6 percent from US $0.48 cents to US $0.49 cents.
NOCZIM said the hikes were necessitated by it selling fuel at 40 percent below the cost of procurement. “Selling price reviews will continue to be made until NOCZIM operates at a break-even level,” the oil company warned.
