Dutch aid for reconstruction

Mozambique and the Netherlands on Monday signed an agreement under which the Netherlands will disburse US $20 million for reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by floods that hit the country in February, news reports said.

At a donors conference in May in Rome on Mozambique’s post-flood reconstruction, the Netherlands pledged US $45 million assistance.

Dutch ambassador to Mozambique, Arie Van Der Wiel, said the funds would be disbursed in two tranches during the 2000-2001 fiscal year. He said the remaining US $25 million would be available “after evaluation of the progress of the reconstruction activities”.

The aid, added the reports, will be used in activities aimed at minimising the impact of the floods in the education, water and sanitation sectors.
