Mugabe visits Lubumbashi

    Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is in the southern DRC city of Lubumbashi on a two-day state visit for talks with his DRC counterpart Laurent-Desire Kabila on the war and trade issues, Zimbabwean state television reported. Zimbabwe has deployed 11,000 troops to prop up Kabila against rebels backed by Rwanda and Uganda. Last month President Mugabe said his troops would remain in Congo until the security of Kabila’s government was assured. The main Zimbabwean opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has called for an immediate withdrawal of all Zimbabwean troops from the DRC. The party claims the war costs Zimbabwe an estimated US $3 million a month.
