Bubonic plague outbreak

Bubonic plague has hit Nsanje, Malawi's southernmost district bordering Mozambique, health officials said on Friday. A senior medical worker at Nsanje district hospital, Bernard Chikonda, told AFP that seven people have been infected with the disease, which is carried by rats. "We suspect 30 more new cases of the plague," Chikonda said. He said that tents had been pitched around several villages to accommodate sufferers. He said that all travellers from neighbouring Mozambique were being quarantined.
